Sumer Walser Williams and her husband were awoken early the other morning by the noises of a lovely guest to their North Carolina home.
It turned out to be the prettiest Peeping Tom ever.
Williams told The Dodo, “We heard clanging outside our bedroom window that backs up to our front porch.” “Sure enough, there was a cub at the front entrance when I turned on the front deck lights.”
The curious cub rose up and peered through their window as Williams and her husband watched in awe. Instead of being outraged by being awakened at the crack of morning, the couple was overjoyed.
Williams recalled, “We remember thinking, ‘This is totally cool.’”
The baby bear’s bravery, however, did not go over well with everyone. After a few moments, the cub’s mom climbed up onto the deck — catching her baby in the act of what she evidently considers a “no-no.”
Here’s that moment on video:
Williams, who has two small children of her own, absolutely understood the bear mom’s reaction to her misbehaving youngster.
“It was so relatable. That’s how I deal with my own kids on a daily basis,” Williams remarked. “I believe that is what contributed to the video’s success. It demonstrated that certain features of parenting are universal across species.”
Williams imagines the bear mom’s message to her cub was something like this: “I have told you a hundred times not to bother people.”
The bears then disappeared into the darkness, capping off a memorable vacation for Williams and her husband. Hopefully, the cub has realized that keeping his distance from people is the best course of action. But that wouldn’t be the only thing they’d learn.
“These visits serve as a reminder that we are guests in their homes just as much as they are in ours,” Williams said.
